The tales about few presents | Opowieści o kilku prezentach
A digest based on some stories I shared in the comments | Przegląd bazujący na pewnych opowieściach wypisanych w komentarzach
I was inspired to write this post by my coments under these posts by
, but wanted to improve the way I told them there. The beginning of December means it’s time for gifts season to reach its peak. In polish tradition there are many occasions for them, the most popular being on 6th of December (the St. Nicholas Day), which is a day dedicated to exchanging presents and it’s also when Santa’s visiting children. Less popular, but still common occasion is Christmas Eve and Christmas day. All year round there are also birthdays and namedays (when it’s liturgical memorial of person’s Saint Patron, although in my family youngest children doesn’t get a nameday party), among many other days dedicated to celebrate with certain members of family and friends circle (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day etc.). Therefore, to begin the season, let me tell you some tales I remember about presents that I both gave and received (alone or in cooperation).
The first present I remember choosing for myself was around St. Nick’s Day when I was five. I have just started playing with Lego bricks and wanted to get a cool set, so I wrote in my letter to Santa (in my family we were writing them until I turned 10; then my parents made an “answering” letter in which Santa replied that he’ll be ceding his duty onto them, which was a starting point to split the Santa concept from actual Saint of Myra) that I’d like to get two Lego city planes (I thought the set had two). But after receiving only one, I’ve made two conclusions: 1) I wasn’t nice enough to get all I wanted and 2) I need to ask in more humble way. This was also a great lesson for me to not become too demanding and rather ask for something more of a sentimental value.
The best gifts
The best gift I ever received was a GoPro camera I got from my dad in January of 2018. It was a present “without any special occasion” - right after I told him I’d like to try myself in being an amateur youtuber or Twitch streamer, he without investigating further the topic bought it for me, and it was pretty expensive. To this day I can’t be grateful enough for that gift and support he gave me, because never never before or since have I got something so valuable just like that. Although ultimately I didn’t start streaming due to weak Internet connection we had & deeming my gaming skills to be too bad, I found another use for it, recording our vacation skiing and biking trips.
The best present I gave to my dad was actually a joined effort with my brothers and mum. Reading some news on Wisła Kraków’s website (our favourite sports club), I found information that there’s a possibility to have birthday (or any other occasion) wishes displayed on stadium’s big screens and read out loud by the announcer. It was happening before, but not regularly and until then it wasn’t easy to find any news on how to reach out to the club to get it. I quickly told others about it, keeping it secret from dad and asked if they’d be willing to put their money into it. They immediately agreed and gave me the funds to pull this project. I then emailed the person in the club responsible for displaying information on screens, letting him know I’d like to take advantage of the opportunity to have my wishes “send” that way on the last game of the season, which was the closest day to dad’s birthday. He responded there will be possibility to show the wishes, I only needed to send them the text (and optionally a photo), as well as to pay for this “service”. In response I wrote the wishes, found a photo of me & bros. with dad and sent it to that guy, while mum helped to handle the payment.
This was happening in July of 2020. The COVID pandemic was both making it possible and posed a threat to its happening, as football (soccer) season would normally end in June and due to restrictions dad opted not to renew our season tickets. The games were postponed to July and we had to hope that we’ll be able to enter with only 25% of stands’ capacity to be filled. Luckily, we could go on that match, but the game was boring and dad was thinking about spending the halftime indoors, where he could eat snacks. This was unfortunate, because the wishes were to be displayed and read during halftime, so I started to think how to convince him to stay. I was about to “lie to him by telling the truth”, saying that there will be a surprise performance on the pitch, but he forgot about snacks and started to read something on his phone. I called him to watch the screen just when the announcer started saying “now it’s time for our special wishes. Wishes #1…” Suddenly, right then our photo with my text next to it popped out on screen and I heard my words being read. Dad was very surprised and happy to see himself on the big screen, that he almost forgot to take a picture, thanking me for making him that surprise. He later said it was one of the best and probably the most unexpected present he got! After I told him it was a joined effort, he also thanked the others.
I couldn’t find dad’s picture, so for reference I’m placing here the image from the club store’s site https://sklep.wisla.krakow.pl/produkt/zyczenia-na-telebimie/ . Nowadays it’s easy to order wishes on that site, as the feature became popular.
The best gift for mum was made in another joined effort - about a month before her birthday dad told bros. & me about an advanced sewing course (with six levels of mastery, achieved in weekly sessions spanned across about two months) that he’d love for mum to partake as a birthday present for her. We agreed and saved some money for that goal. Dad then contacted the organisers and bought a turn for mum, getting a “starter pack” with address and welcome letter in return. We handed that pack in an envelope wrapped in a gift paper on mum’s birthday in February of 2021. She took the course in April and May that year and told us it was great, as she learned so many new techniques and skills to improve her sewing. We saw the fruits of it in the following months, as mum showed us variety of coats and other clothes she made for herself and those of us who asked or told her our ideas.
The best gift for my brother Antek was when in 2019 I gave him a GS:GO “skin” (a livery for a gun) he badly wanted. To this day he’s playing with AK-47 | “Neon revolution”, similar to pictured below, but in lower wear (he has “minimal wear” instead of “well-worn”).
My other brother Ignac gave me the funniest present in my life. He remembered how once a long time ago he heard me telling Antek, who was about to go for groceries by bike, what I’d like from the shop. I said “chpisy, colę, te sprawy, żelki jeszcze możesz kupić” (“chips, coke, this stuff, jelly candy you can buy as well”). Ignac then thought it would be a great idea for a bday gift, so sometime later he proceeded to do just that. On my birthday I returned from school later than him and found on the floor in my room (from left to right): a pack chips, big comma written on a paper, 1-litre bottle of coke, another comma, a pack of jelly candy, a paper with words “jeszcze możesz kupić” (you can buy as well). I laughed for a long while, but still I thanked him for it.
Knowing Ignac’s birthday is less than two weeks after mine, I wanted to return the favor. I searched my memories and remembered when despite her warnings he was still eating lots of sweets, mum told him “stop eating this crap!”. I bought few packs of sweets and wrote on the paper next to it, editing the line a bit, “Will you be eating againg the crap?”. Ignac also found it very funny, although he stopped eating loads of candy from then on.
The worst gifts (or my worst attitude towards presents)
Sadly, I wasn’t always grateful for presents and heart some people put into finding it for me. I remember particularly well two times. The first was when I was in kindergarten. I was expecting to get from my grandpa some sweets probably for Christmas but I got sesame seeds candy, which at the time I didn't like. I was so disappointed I spoke loudly how I don’t like it, and later was told by my partents to apologise to him for what I said. Luckily, he forgave me and in later years we talked about what would I like. I eventually grew to like sesame candy.

The second occured in my last year of junior high. On St. Nicholas' day we had “Secret Santa” - the class gift exchange. I will get to that shortly, but before that some details about how the Secret Santa looked like then. It worked like this: a few weeks prior, we all were drawing the name of the person we were to make gift for, then everybody had to speak loudly what they wanted. In theory we had to keep in secret who has who, but before the lessons ended on the day of the draw, everybody knew through tattling or asking two of my classmates who were sketching a network. The dreamed present had to have a “reasonable price” of course, in this case no more than 50 PLN (about $12,5). The choice for boys was easy - each year all of us wanted PaySafeCard, which is a special 16-digit code that carries the exact amount of money spend for it and could be used in most of online stores with items for video games. This is also exactly why back then I wanted to draw a boy, because girls in my class had very specific dreams.
When in my first year of JH schol, I got one who was a painter, I had to look for something in a professional shop and still the present (few unusual paints and a brush) was missed (although I got to know that only via eavesdropping). That same year one of my classmates was expressing loudly how he hated to be my Secret Santa. I wanted to comment it in a nasty way, but I forced myself to nicely tell him I want something about tanks. What’s weird, he was kind enough to buy me a book about tanks of the Second World War and didn’t make a single rude comment more.
Back to my ungratefullness. As I said, it was the last Secret Santa during my junior high. Someone gave me small amount of bonus cash to be spent in World of Tanks, an online game I stopped playing earlier that year. Again, I was upset with that. What's more, I was back then conflicted with most of the class members, so I didn't forget to mention on the forum that I don't play this game anymore and basically somebody is not listening carefully to what I wanted, not to mention not following my interests. It turned out my Secret Santa was one of the nicest guys in class, so I felt bad about it and apologised. Fortunately, he haven’t heard my comments and didn't hold any grudges.
That’s all for now. See you in my other works.

, ale chciałem je opowiedzieć nieco poprawniej.Początek grudnia oznacza nastanie szczytowego sezonu prezentowego.
Ahhh the memories of presents past .... the year my DH turned 70. I got the local tv station to add his photo and our good wishes to their occasional birthday greetings announcement. He was surprised beyond compare and I recorded the greeting to live on ....
Interesting memories, Max. I always prefer the personalized gift where you can tell someone was actually thinking of what you liked. I still have a dress my mom made for me (she was an excellent seamstress like your mom) when I was in 2nd grade, about 70 years ago. The dress was really nothing special except for the fact that she had embroidered my abbreviated first name on the collar. Now this is a woman who to her dying day never once called me that - it was always my full name which I disliked but everyone else called me the shortened version. The worst gifts were always the ones my boss gave me: anything with cats on it, like Christmas ornaments, calendars, coffee cups, collectibles, etc. Just how many cat things does one need? ha
