The burning wastebasket | Płonący śmietnik
My comment on "The Fire"
The story I shared commenting the newsletter of
(embed linking to it below) took place on one January Saturday, however I can’t remember what year it was. I think I was at the time in junior high school, but because with my younger brother Antek we wanted that memory to stay in secret, I didn’t link it with the date in my mind. It was a big display of immaturity and irresponsibility about which I feel bad. Anyway, enough time has passed since then, so here’s fully “declassified” with some more details:(…)
I have seen however a trash can burning indoors, but that story is problematic to share. One Saturday many years ago we stayed home alone with my brother. He was playing with matches and felt tired, so he dropped one to his bin and set on fire the tissues left there after his illness. A few seconds later the thrash can burst in flames. He immediately extinguished it with water he used earlier for mopping. Because he did it quickly, there was no damage other than burned thrash bag and tissues, but he poured water in a way that resulted in burned tissues ending on the floor and colouring part of it permanently in dark brown. Because we knew there would be collective responsibility and huge punishment for both of us if our parents have found out about it, I helped him hide the traces of it from them. After everything cooled down and dried out we took a carpet from the basement and placed it over the "evidence". There was also a lot of smoke, so we wanted to pour in fresh air as soon as possible. Because it was winter, soon the whole house was cold. I also promised him to keep it secret. Despite the house being cold and my brother's room rearranged, our parents somehow didn't get suspicious and although they found out the floor looks differently when we were repainting our house a couple of years later, but miraculously they never discovered the reason behind it, and I don’t remember ever revealing them the truth.
Our parents left probably for my youngest brother Ignac’s dancing competition he participated in as a kindergartener or in his early primary school. Where has Antek acquired matches I don’t know to this day, as well as why had he the desire to play with them. Perhaps he wanted to do anything that could kill time for him. He probably got distracted during a break from doing his usual Saturday chores (the rule was we couldn’t use screens before finishing all the housework, so playing on the only computer in the house back then wasn’t really an option) and wasn’t in full health after recent illness. I have witnessed it because I was possibly on my way to begin mopping the floors in one of the rooms upstairs.
Antek told me to come to his room, then said some unimportant stuff while igniting and blowing the matches. The dull he felt got to me too, therefore we both missed the point when a match slipped off his hand and fell right into his garbage bin, immediately setting tissues thrown there on fire.
Suddenly, we saw a big fire coming out of that wastebasket, which thankfully has revived us. We immediately sprinted to the bucket with the water he used earlier to mop his allotment of floors, which was standing near the door of his room. As I have said, there was enough water to instantly cut extinguish the flames, but because Antek was panicked and wanted to cut off the fire quickly, he used too much force to pour the water from the bucket and its fall made the thrash can collapse right onto the floor. This resulted in the burned tissues (and other contents of the garbage can as well) flowing out of the bin and spreading over the floor while still pretty hot. Given we have cork floor it’s a miracle it didn’t set off. Meanwhile, I ran to get another bucket with cold water, which we used to fully cool those tissues, but they have already made their markings on the cork.
Although the whole thing happened in less than a minute, the smell of burning could be felt in multiple rooms across the upstairs floor. We both knew ver well that there’s no way there won’t be collective responsibility and huge punishment for Antek’s immature action if our parents find out what happened, so I needed to help him hide the evidence. To ventilate the smoke and smell of burning we opened all windows upstairs, despite it being cold outside. We tried at first to wipe off the markings from the tissues, but they weren’t getting off the floor, so while fearing it’s pretty visible (in hindsight I don’t think it was, but panicked mind perceives such things differently) we settled on covering them with a carpet, as we didn’t want to do huge rearrangement of furniture in order to avoid parents’ suspicion. After we did all that, Antek made me promise to never tell our parents what has happened, to which I gladly agreed.
But we forgot to close some of the windows before the rest of the family returned from dancing, so it was still pretty cold inside when they arrived. Fortunately for me and Antek, all of the bad smells have already blown away, so we lied it was because we wanted some fresh air to do the housework faster. What helped with explaining why there’s a carpet now in my brother’s room was that he expressed the interest of taking it sometime earlier and just wanted to see how it looks in the desired area, so mum and dad believed that and let him kept it.
The events of that Saturday left a huge impact on Antek. Since then, he’s using matches and lighter indoors only to light up the candles and being 100% concentrated on what he’s doing. I don’t think he have removed the carpet for vacuuming and mopping for the next couple of years. As promised we kept our mouths shut for a long time. Even when we did the repainting of our house throughout one summer a few years ago and while preparing to paint his room mum and dad saw unusual patterns on his cork, he lied it was a paint he used to colour models he put together at school.
There’s also a gallery below with the photos that depict the current state of Antek’s cork floor and garbage bin.
That’s all for now. See you in my other works.

These might look like typical knots, but among it there are three pretty distinctive tissue-stains | To może wyglądać na typowe sęki, ale wśród nich jest kilka dosyć wyróżniających się plam po chusteczkach.

So glad clearer minds prevailed to douse the flames. It could have been catastrophic! Antek is lucky to have you for a brother. I doubt mine could have kept the secret as long.
